RIP – two show stalwarts

By | November 11, 2023

Sadly we have to report the recent death of two of the Show’s regular attendees.

Ken Gibbons was involved with the York Model Railway Show for more than 30 years. As a member of the Hull MRS, he was always early on the scene on Thursday, to help mark out the floor. More than that, he became one of the regular team at York every Easter. At 6 foot plus, he could be seen from anywhere in the hall and his sense of humour prevailed when all around were pulling their hair out!

After the death of Mike Cook in 2011 Ken became the cornerstone of the show, as assistant to Mal Scrimshaw. His cumulative knowledge and experience proved vital after Mal’s passing in 2021. Ken was the continuity as I took over as Show Manager; he had all the answers.

He cannot be replaced; he can only be followed.

Show Manager & Director

John Ross of Solihull MRS

We have also been informed that John Ross, another of our regulars, has recently passed. He had one of the key roles on the door greeting exhibitors and traders as they arrived for set up and then monitoring admissions on other days. Regular show attendees will also have known him from his presence as a second-hand dealer regularly operating from one of the ground floor bar counters.

John New

Web manager/YMRS Director.

We offer our sincere condolences to their families and friends; their presence will be sorely missed when we reassemble for the 2024 Show.
